The Research Behind Premarital Counseling
Better Outcomes
A landmark meta-analysis by Carroll & Doherty reviewed the outcome research on premarital prevention programs and found that couples who participated in structured premarital education achieved significantly better relationship outcomes than those who did not.
On average, couples who completed premarital education had better relationship outcomes — including stronger communication, healthier conflict resolution, and higher overall relationship quality — than approximately 79% of couples who did not participate.
